Good grades do not come from preparing only when an exam is near. They are often the result of small study habits that children practice consistently over time.
The way children approach studying can be just as important as how much time they spend preparing. Knowing how to manage their schedule, work through tasks, check their work, and tackle difficult lessons can help them become more confident and capable learners.
Good study habits do not develop overnight. They develop through repetition and an environment that supports consistent learning.
Here are four study habits parents can help their children build early, and how Kumon’s structured learning approach gives students opportunities to practice them.
4 Study Habits Every Child Should Build Early
Study Regularly
Children benefit from making learning a consistent part of their routine.
When studying only happens when there is homework to finish or an exam to prepare for, it can feel like something children have to do rather than a regular part of their day. Setting aside time for learning can help them become more accustomed to studying and managing their time.
Keeping up with lessons can help reduce stress by spreading topics out instead of cramming before exams. To support this, parents can create a realistic schedule that fits their child’s study routine.
This does not necessarily mean studying for long hours. What matters is consistency. Even a short period of focused effort can help build a productive habit.
In the same way, Kumon encourages students to practice daily through assigned worksheets. This routine gives students repeated opportunities to review, complete their work, and make learning part of their everyday schedule.
Over time, studying can become less of a task that children need to be reminded about and more of a familiar part of their routine.
Work Independently
Children gradually need to learn how to approach their schoolwork without relying on someone to guide them through every step.
When parents constantly remind children what to do, explain every instruction, or immediately provide answers when they encounter difficulty, children may have fewer opportunities to figure things out for themselves.
Parents can encourage independence by giving their child time to read instructions, understand the task, and attempt the work before stepping in. If your child asks for help, try asking what they already understand or what they have tried first. Developing independence is important because students will not always have someone to guide them during assignment, project, or exam.
Similarly, Kumon develops self-learning skills by encouraging children to work through worksheets on their own first. By following instructions and using examples, they learn to approach problems and find solutions without relying on the Instructor or their parents for every step.
This also helps them feel more confident about working independently, taking initiative, making decisions, and taking greater responsibility for their learning
Check Your Work
Finishing an assignment is not always the same as finishing the learning process.
Children can benefit from developing the habit of looking back at their work before moving on. Checking an answer, rereading a sentence, or looking at a calculation again can help children catch mistakes they may have overlooked the first time.
Parents can encourage this habit by asking questions such as, “Which part was difficult?” or “Can you check your answer again?” Rather than correcting every mistake for them, give your child the opportunity to find the error and work out how to correct it.
Kumon helps students develop the habit of reviewing their work and making corrections when necessary after completing each worksheet. This allows them to check their solutions or formulas and think through the correct answer.
As children become more accustomed to reviewing and correcting their work, checking becomes a natural part of their study routine, helping them spot mistakes more quickly and improve accuracy.
Practice What You Find Difficult
Not every lesson will come easily to a child. Learning how to respond when something is difficult is an important part of developing effective study habits.
Children may be tempted to skip questions they find challenging, wait for someone to give them the answer, or become frustrated when they cannot solve something immediately. Instead, encourage them to spend time working through the difficulty and trying again.
Parents can help by reminding children that finding something difficult does not mean they cannot learn it. Encourage them to reread the instructions, look at an example, try a different approach, or practice similar questions. Working through new challenges can help them develop persistence and confidence as improvement takes time.
In Kumon, students are introduced to topics gradually and build mastery through consistent practice before moving on to more advanced concepts. This approach gives them time to understand each idea and become familiar with different types of questions.
Because of this, children can face new topics head-on and keep trying even when a problem feels difficult.
Final Thoughts
The study habits children develop early can influence how they approach learning as they grow. With the right support and learning environment, studying can become a more natural part of their everyday routine rather than something they only do when schoolwork or exams demand it.
