by Atty. Sittie Raifah Pamaloy-Hassan of Iligan (Learning) Center
Back in 2017, I stumbled upon the success stories of children excelling in both school and Kumon on social media. Intrigued and inspired, I embarked on a mission to find the key to their accomplishments. That quest led me to a Kumon Center in Iligan City, where my husband and I attended the parent orientation. As I spoke with Teacher Grace, my mind soared with anticipation, envisioning a future of endless possibilities for my kids.
Kumon Parenthood and Partnership
As a Kumon and working parent, managing the complexities of guiding not one, but two children through the program posed some challenges. The journey was time-consuming, especially given the additional responsibilities that come with being a parent of twins. My husband took charge of the math side, leaving me to navigate the world of reading.
Our Kumon journey faced its toughest challenges during the Marawi Siege when we became internally displaced persons (IDPs) and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these trying times, my family and my resilient children did not waver. Even during the pandemic, they continued their Kumon studies online, and with the Center’s innovative approach, it felt as if everything was normal. The pandemic, in an unexpected twist, provided us with ample time for home monitoring and ensured the uninterrupted progression of their Kumon journey.
Temporarily residing in Zamboanga City during the pandemic, we persisted in receiving and completing Kumon worksheets sent through a courier. Our eyes were set on this very moment, and we refused to let external challenges hinder our path.
The Kumon Effect
The impact of Kumon on my sons transcends academic achievements. It has molded them into responsible and motivated individuals. While faced with difficult worksheets, there were moments they contemplated quitting especially in Reading because accordingly its hard. Surprisingly, they excelled in Reading before Math, proving that perseverance conquers difficulties. My son, Rahman, even ventured into leadership, a feat my husband and I never imagined achieving. Indeed, Kumon played a pivotal role in shaping their confidence and determination.
Serve As Your Child’s Support System
To fellow Kumon parents facing similar challenges, I understand the occasional lapses and the inevitable absences from the Center. Reach out to your dedicated Instructors, engage in open communication, and ensure a strong support system for your children.
To Kumon students, see each worksheet as a tool for deepening your understanding. Treat it as a daily priority, ensuring consistent progress toward your goals. Remember that every challenge you face is an opportunity for growth.
A Thankful Triumph
Without hesitation, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my amazing twins for their unwavering cooperation with their father and for embracing his guidance with open hearts. Their ability to comprehend the deeper meaning behind his actions reflects the resilience and maturity they’ve gained through their Kumon journey. Our ultimate goal has never been for them to amass wealth, but to grow into individuals with the right values and exemplary character.
There may be moments when their father’s teaching methods seemed strict, but I wanted them to understand that this is a manifestation of his deep love for them. I’ve witnessed times when he cried alone, burdened by guilt afterward. I, too, feel guilty at times because I can’t always be with them. I cannot forget the time Rahim said, “Mami ok lang gabi ka na dumarating, importante dumarating ka.” These words continue to echo in our hearts, a testament to the profound understanding and love that exists within our family.
To my beloved spouse, thank you for your unyielding dedication to our children’s growth. Your sacrifices and commitment haven’t gone unnoticed. Your tears, a testament to your love, only deepen our appreciation for the extraordinary father and husband you are.
My appreciation goes to Teacher Grace, Sir June, and the entire Kumon team who have tirelessly guided my children. A special thank you to the deaf-mute teacher whose effective methods have left a lasting impact on my kids.
