“Kumon instilled in me the value of persisting until success is achieved. This lesson has been a guiding principle throughout various phases of my life, prominently in law school and my subsequent legal career.”
I was enrolled in Kumon by my mother because she wanted me to succeed in my academics early on. In school, I struggled with Math the most, but my time in Kumon taught me to bounce back even if the topics were challenging and to look at the bigger picture rather than get discouraged by the immediate challenges.
I still remember the time I answered my first worksheet. I felt confident and excited to learn. The confidence was there because the first few topics were familiar, and excited because the teachers in the Center were always so kind and helpful. The familiarity of the topics made me realize that the program is designed to test my current understanding and to push me to elevate my skills and knowledge. By focusing on the long-term benefits, I found motivation and resilience. Ultimately, I discovered that confronting challenges head-on in Kumon not only enhanced my academic capabilities but also instilled in me a valuable mindset of continuous improvement.

Finishing the Kumon Journey
My mother’s unwavering belief in both the program and in me has been a constant source of motivation throughout my journey. She became my primary inspiration to complete the Kumon Program. From the beginning, she instilled in me the importance of dedication and hard work, emphasizing the long-term benefits that Kumon could bring to my academic and personal development. Knowing that she believed in the program’s efficacy and my potential fueled my determination to persevere and successfully complete my Kumon journey.
Kumon has played an important role in shaping my character and influencing my outlook towards life. The program instilled in me the importance of perseverance and the refusal to succumb to challenges easily. One significant aspect of my character that Kumon has cultivated is mental resilience. The continuous exposure to challenging problems taught me not to quit. Moreover, Kumon has instilled in me the understanding that achieving great things often requires sacrifices. The program emphasized the significance of dedication and the willingness to invest time and effort for long-term success.

Kumon has not only enhanced my academic capabilities but has also played a transformative role in shaping my character, fostering mental strength, optimism, and a resilient approach towards life’s challenges. Through Kumon, I have not only achieved greatness in academics but also developed life skills that proved useful after program completion:
• Time Management – As a child, the temptation to play with my friends after school was strong, but I quickly learned the importance of balancing my commitments. Going to the Kumon Center twice a week required time management and this early recognition of responsibilities and priorities instilled in me a sense of discipline that has extended into various aspects of my academic and personal life.
• Attention to Detail – Both the Math and Reading Programs presented challenges that required attention to detail. Whether navigating through intricate paragraphs in the Reading Program; or solving complex math problems, even those as basic as correctly applying PMDAS. This skill not only enhanced my problem-solving abilities but also fostered a deep understanding of the subjects.
• Problem Solving – The program has instilled in me the belief that, regardless of how complicated or challenging a problem may seem, there is always a solution waiting to be discovered. Whether through dedicated contemplation or spending hours working through the intricacies, Kumon has taught me the importance of perseverance in the face of difficulties. This skill goes beyond academics, transcending into various aspects of my life. It has shaped my mindset not to succumb to challenges easily, but rather to approach them with a determined and solution-oriented attitude.
Kumon in School and Beyond
The skills I developed in Kumon played a pivotal role in shaping my journey towards becoming a lawyer. The parallels between my experiences in Kumon and law school were striking, which allowed my adjustment period to be easier than usual.
One notable experience in law school that encapsulates this commitment to trying again until success is a moot court competition conducted by the Dean of our law school where I faced a particularly challenging case. Despite my initial attempts, I did not perform as well as I had hoped. Rather than be disheartened, I took the constructive feedback to heart, identified areas for improvement, and dedicated myself to refining my arguments and presentation. This commitment to continuous improvement mirrored the lessons from Kumon, where each challenge was an opportunity to enhance skills.
Translating this lesson into my legal practice, where the stakes are high in cases involving people’s property or lives, I realized the imperative of not giving up. Whether it was crafting compelling arguments, conducting thorough research, or presenting a case in court, persisting until justice is served as the highlight of my approach to legal practice.
Now, as a full-fledged lawyer, my utmost goal is to uphold the honor and respect associated with this esteemed profession. I recognize that achieving this milestone is not only the result of my hard work but also a blessing that I deeply prayed for. I aspire to be a dedicated advocate for justice, using my legal skills and knowledge to fight for the rights and well-being of others. The discipline, resilience, and determination cultivated during my Kumon journey have become integral in shaping my professional outlook.
My next goals revolve around being an honorable and impactful lawyer and contributing positively to society. I look forward to making a difference in the lives of others while continually striving for excellence and justice. Thank you, Kumon, for contributing to my journey and shaping my approach to life’s challenges.
